Green ReadingGreen RepublicFestival Republic Festival Republic aims to do as much as possible to reduce the impact our business and our festivals have on the environment. We strive to use innovative solutions to fundamental areas of impact such as energy, waste and transport. We also delve deeper into specific areas of our events, looking for ways to minimise impact, often including festival audiences in helping make these changes happen. ECO TravelReduce Your Carbon FootprintDo you know that the biggest CO2 impact on festivals is simply through the audience travelling to get there? In 2007 70% of people travelled by Bus or Train to get to Reading Festival. Fantastic! We want to try and increase that even more this year. Handy Tips For Green Campers Green Campers
Cup and Bottle DepositReusable Beer Cups In 2007 we introduced a highly successful way of drastically reducing the waste in the arena by having a 10p deposit on beer cups. In 2008 this will return, and will extend to ½ pints and also to the cardboard pint carrying trays. You’ll pay a 10p deposit, which you’ll get back when you return your cup to the refund points. Last year over 90% of the cups were returned. Just amazing – that’s more than 6 tonnes of cardboard which was diverted from landfill. Water Bottle Deposit Your Can CountsIt is estimated around 8 tonne of aluminium cans are at the festival after the party’s over. Much of this is left on the ground in the campgrounds. We want to let you know that YOUR CAN COUNTS. Bring back a bagful of cans to the Recycle Exchanges in the campgrounds, and we’ll give you a free can of beer. It’s that simple. We’ll even give you the bag to collect the cans in. They’ll be handed out at wristband exchange when you enter the site, by our Green Messengers wandering the campgrounds, from your campsite manager’s caravan, and also from the Litter Exchanges. Tent RecyclingEvery year, thousands of tents, sleeping bags and camping mats are left behind after the festival, along with things like wellies, radios, and clothes. We encourage you to pack your gear up and take it home, ready for your next festival weekend. Not only will you save money, you’re helping the environment by not being wasteful and not giving fuel to those that are looking for abandoned gear to destroy in fires sending up toxic fumes into the air. Buying StuffLimiting the amount of STUFF you kit yourself out with the come camping at the festivals for the weekend, will really help to reduce the overall environmental...especially if you are going to throw out your STUFF after the event. The more STUFF you buy, the bigger your carbon footprint related to you coming to the festival. Your STUFF is mined, manufactured, distributed, retailed and makes its way to your house - transport along the way, power used at every stage. The less STUFF you buy, the smaller your footprint's gonna be. Tents and Camping GearWe encourage you to take your camping equipment back home with your to re-use next year. However, if you don’t want to take it back, please pack it up and hand it in to our donation points. We take all camping gear and unopened non-perishable food. Don’t leave your camp set up to be trashed and burned, or thrown into landfill. LitterPlease help keep the Reading Festival tidy by cleaning up after yourself, using the Recycling Points and Litter Drop Points. You can recycle aluminium cans and plastic bottles. Please don’t drop or burn your rubbish; there are plenty of bins onsite. We have introduced more of these this year to make it even easier for you. You’ll also be able to get a free beer for bringing your litter and recycling to the exchanges. Returning again in 2008 will be the 10p deposit/refund system on beer cups. Look for the refund points next to bars in the arena. Litter Exchanges and Free BeerEvery year we have litter exchange points in the campsites and at these points if you bring a full bin bag of recycled cans, you will be given a token for a free can. Last year we gave away nearly 6,000! |
